…And how important is it?
Self-awareness is a powerful tool for personal growth and development. It’s the ability to recognise your strengths and weaknesses and work to improve in areas where you need it.
It’s an integral part of personal growth because it allows you to make decisions based on what you know about yourself.
The first kind of self-awareness is called private or internal self-awareness. It’s the awareness of your values, aspirations, and actions—and how they impact others. This kind of self-knowledge comes from within, from knowing what it means to be human and making good decisions based on those values.
Your private self-awareness is the part of you that is aware of what you’re thinking, feeling, or experiencing. It’s who you are when you’re alone—your thoughts and feelings and how they relate to each other.
The second type of self-awareness is called public or external self-awareness: it comes from understanding how others see and perceive you. It’s the part of yourself that you present to the world at large—the words that come out of your mouth, what you wear or don’t wear, how much makeup or no makeup goes on under those eyes, etcetera.
Both types of awareness are essential because they help us figure out where we stand and how we can deal with the situation we are in. In addition, self-awareness is a critical part of being able to do your job well. It’s the difference between recognising when you’re in trouble and being unable to see or admit it.
Self-awareness is something that many people struggle with, but it’s essential to know how you can improve your own self-awareness.
In order to improve your self-awareness, it’s important to start by understanding your current level of awareness. To do this, ask yourself questions such as:
✼ How aware am I of my thoughts?
✼ Do I know what my strengths are?
✼ Do I know what my weaknesses are?
✼ How aware am I of others’ thoughts?
✼ Do I know how others perceive me?
✼ How aware am I of the world around me?
Once you have the answer to these questions, it will be easier to identify and understand yourself, your values and beliefs, as well as how you relate to others.
You can develop self-awareness through:
- mindfulness
- meditation
- journaling
- learning about yourself on a personal level
When we’re self-aware, we can choose the best path for ourselves rather than following the crowd or blindly expecting things to work out just because they’ve always worked out in the past.
On top of that, self-awareness helps us bring more meaning into our lives by knowing where we’re heading so we can make better decisions.
