How to Know If You're Dating a Narcissist

How to Know If You’re Dating a Narcissist

…and how to deal with them.

Is it possible to know if you’re dating a narcissist?

Narcissists are not always despicable people. But dating someone who has narcissism can be difficult. Here are 8 warning signs to watch out for.

➥ Lacking empathy.

They seem unable to empathize with others, and they don’t seem to want an intimate connection.

➥ Monopolizing conversation.

During talks, narcissists talk over or interrupt other participants to express their opinions or brag about themselves.

➥ Fixating on Appearance.

Narcissists enjoy staring in the mirror at themselves. To bolster their lofty self-images, they invest extra effort in beautifying themselves.
They have an inflated sense of self-worth and believe God made them a gift to the world.

➥ Attention-seeking.

The superiority complex of a narcissist is like a balloon that progressively deflates in the absence of constant praise and admiration.
They become unnecessarily upset if they feel ignored or if someone else receives more attention than they do.

➥ Fearing Abandonment.

Many experts believe that narcissists fear abandonment because they have deep-seated insecurity. As a result, a narcissist sabotages any possibility of looking deep within and forming emotional connections.

➥ Living in fantasy.

Narcissists perpetuate their dream world by self-glorifying fantasies, self-deception, and illusions that give them a sense of uniqueness and power.
They boast about their accomplishments, romantic victories, or wealth incessantly.

➥ Conflicting relationships.

People with NPD frequently clash with others, which is typical. However, if you look into their relationships closely, you will find that they don’t have many close connections.

➥ Gaslighting and manipulating.

One of the defining characteristics of narcissism — gaslighting and manipulation — with gaslighting techniques includes:

  • Casting doubt on someone’s integrity.
  • Downplaying or denying what occurred.
  • Omitting crucial information.

While narcissistic manipulation frequently implies that you consistently make poor choices and are incapable of doing anything correctly.

What to do if you’re dating a narcissist?

Narcissists may be incredibly appealing and captivating. They excel at portraying a spectacular, alluring self-image that enthrals us.

It may be challenging to know what to do exactly if you think the person you’re dating is a narcissist, particularly if you have feelings for them. However, since narcissism is a mental health disorder, the person is not intentionally acting this way.

Maintaining boundaries is essential to maintain a romantic relationship with someone with a narcissistic personality disorder.
But it is also important to learn to step away when needed.
